Halloween Layout With Punched Paper Pumpkins

Hello mixed media makers! Leigh here, to share a Halloween layout that features a painted cut file from Paige Evans, and punched paper pumpkins. The Vicki Boutin Paints work beautifully and coordinate with the other products in the mixed media lines by Vicki. 

 

 

 

The painted cut file spider web creates a focal point in the center of the layout. The watercolor splatters were created with the VB Paints and Watercolor Brushes. If you have been on Pinterest, you may have seen the trend of painted pumpkins, and I recreated the look with the pretty papers in the Field Notes line, and also some All The Good Things papers. The bottom four pumpkins were made with the Willow Lane papers from Crate Paper. The turquoise polka dot pumpkin was made with the All The Good Things paper. This layout is an example of creating without specific Halloween themed items. 

 

 

 

The first step was to gesso the cut file. After it dried, I painted with the Vicki Boutin Paints and VB Watercolor Brushes. I wanted a varied look, so I watered down the paint more in some areas. I used a combination of red, orange, and cotton candy pink to create the coral color at the top. The light orange was created by adding white to the orange paint.

 

 

 

I used the Fiskars Hot Air Ballon punch to create the paper pumpkins. I added three layers to each one, and punched the stems from the black and white script paper in the All The Good Things line. I adhered each layer with liquid glue and a fine-line bottle. You can also use a circle punch and just trim away portions of the top, to create a pumpkin shape. I like to use a punch so that the layers are all the same size.  

 

 

 

I just glued down the center part of the cut file, so that the outer sections lift off the background.The  pumpkins are all gathered near the center of the layout, over the photo and the painted cut file. The bats are also from a Paige Evans cut file, and the same black with white script paper as the stems. The black print on white paper bats were created with the Explore Field Notes Stamps and Die Set and black ink. I stamped the photo mat as well. It is fun to create your own patterns with the stamps in the Field Notes line. 

 

 

 

Some of the bats were attached under the cut file to add some interest. I glued just the center of the bat to the spider web on top. I added a wonky title to match the wonky pumpkins, and tucked a Field Notes chipboard in with the title. The All The Good Things Thickers are perfect for the title, and I added hand-written journaling underneath.

Scary Moments with Jana

Hi everyone, Jana here with you today. I have a fun new Layout to share. The Design Team will celebrate Halloween this week and i am the first on the blog.
I started this project with some hand stitching, i used a CutFile from Paige Evans as a stencil for my holes... a big pumpkin in the background.
Purple and orange is a great color combination for Halloween and so i added some purple Art Crayon splatters to my background.

I used orange and brown embroidery floss for my stitching and filled the open spots with a patterned paper from the Field Notes Collection. The picture show me with a SnapChat Filter on my face. Halloween filters are the best!

I decided to add some messy dimension to the pumpkin pieces with vellum. I crumpled the pieces in my hand and layered two pieces together then i glued the distressed paper pieces on top of them. This is giving such a nice look and i really like it. I also had a look into the Ephemera DieCuts and grabbed a big orange circle to the mix. For more details on the pumpkin i also added two leaves to the stem. They are still leftovers from last projects. The bats are also a CutFile from Paige Evans.

The black from the bats inspired my to use more black pieces, so my title is a mix from the Chipboard Thickers "All the good Things" Collection and the black script words from the "Field Notes" Collection. The little black stars are also from the same sticker sheet.

I also added some black and white watercolor stickers; one on the photo and the other one right next to the titel. I decided to place some stickers on top of the pumpkin, too. I really love how this is looking. Did you know... be a little crazy! Yes, that´s me!

Here is a closer look from the dimensional pumpkin. This project was a fun to make and i really like how it turned out.

Selfie Love | Focus on the Journaling Ephemera with Nathalie

Hi there!

Nathalie with you today to wrap up the Journal Ephemera focus week.   This little pack of ephemera, tags, journal spots, frames, and labels is so versatile and a must for all your projects.  Today, i want to show you just one more way that they can help you create a new page.

 

 

I chose to play with all the square frames that i found in the journaling ephemera pack.   This page took no time to put together, as all the color and shape of the frames dictated the look of the page.     The cascade of frames (one of them comes from the ALL THE GOOD THINGS Collection Journaling Ephemera pack) was the starting point for the page, everything was build around this.

 

 

Once I marked the position of the frames on a gessoed foundation paper, a bit of gesso was added through the circle stencil from the INk Spill set to create the texture of the background.  Then  the watercolor look of the page was added using the warm and neutral art set- this was set by the colors that are featured in the frames- .   To finish the background, i added a few butterflies using one of the previous released stencils and the stencil brush, then a few drops of diluted gold glaze.

 

To decorate the picture I chose to add a few more pieces from the journaling ephemera along with  some watercolor stickers (colored with a mix of art crayon and gold glaze) to the side of the picture.

 

 

The title was built with a cut file from JustNick Studio and one of the watercolor stickers.  They both got a coat of shine courtesy of some diluted gold glaze.   To complement the page and bring movement to it, i added a few fussy cut butterflies along the page. 

 

Love how this all turned out.  Having the ephemera pieces as a starting point for this page made it so easy to build in a short amount of time, the following video will showcase how it all came together.

Junque Journal Pages with Leigh: Journal Die Cuts

Hello crafty friends! I have two art journal pages in the Vicki Boutin Junque Journal! I love using this journal to try out mixed media, and also for art journaling. I used the left-overs of the free cut file from this month in the FB Mixed Media Community.

 

 

 

The right side page is one from the Watercolor Pages Refill Packs for the Junque Journal. I added all my mixed media watercolor with VB Art Crayons, and VB Watercolor Brushes. While I had the colors out, I watercolored the left-over cuts from Vicki's FREE cut file. I added lots of pink and yellow to freshen up the color scheme. 

 

 

 

Up close, you can see the journaling die cuts are a focal point of the page, and a great way to add your journaling on a mixed media background. I also used the Field Notes Washi Tape to add each journaling die cut.

 

 

 

I added a transparency acetate to hold the photos in between these two pages. That way I have plenty of room for the journaling to be the focus of the page and you can still flip the acetate page to see both photos. Love the die cut label, used as a title, from the same package of die cuts. I stamped the leaves on the acetate with Vicki Boutin Paint and her stamps. 

 

 

 

The back of the acetate page holds another photo, and the leaves are still visible because the page is clear. I love the way the watercolor dries on the Watercolor Junque Journal Pages. let´s do this {journaling spots} with Jana

Hi everyone, Jana back again and i have another project to share. This Layout is about my beloved hubby, and it is something like a "10 things i love about you" page.
I will add some personal notes to this layout, later! It is kinda private, that is the reason for my blank journaling card...

As you can see i also did a lot of fussy cutting on this page. I really love the paper with all of the pencils and brushes (Field Notes) and yes, also the floral wreath paper (Choose to shine).
But let´s start at the beginning from the page, ok?

I started my Layout with a gessoed sheet of the Foundation Paper and a stencil from the {ink spill} pack. I added the Gesso through the stencil, i really love how this is looking. Sadly, i will add so much color and other stuff that you can´t tell that there are hearts on the background paper... but that is totally ok for me. I know the hearts are there ;)

The colors i picked are perfectly matching the embellishment and the photo. I used the art crayons {cool} set and started with a lot of splatters and layers and layers of art crayons. This is really my favorite technique and i really love how the layers are looking. The different strengths of color make it all more interesting and also lend more depth, so easy and so effective.

The small photo shows my hubby in the garden, working on some plants...What I love about him is that he cares for everything and is always there for me. If I have a spontaneous idea for my studio or a shelf must be built again, he is there and makes it. He is just perfect in so many ways. You can see that i added a lot of stuff around the little photo. There are some sayings, some flowers, leaves and hearts. The pencils and brushes stand for his creativity and all of the plans he made.

I also added some stamped and heat embossed vellum leaves to the mix - and this is still a stunning little detail! I love heat embossing on vellum! The last thing I've done here on this layout are the torn edges that I have deposited with matching colored paper. I am so happy about this Layout and i hope you´re liking it too.

Working with the Journaling ephemera | Nathalie DeSousa

Hi there!

Nathalie with you today to share with you a new project thas\t highlights the journaling ephemera and the beautiful Field Notes collection paper.   I think we all love and have -at least- a few sheets of patterned paper in our stash. Personally, i love patterned paper, and the ones in the Field Notes collection are just gorgeous; now combine those papers with all the beautiful tags, journal spots and labels in the ephemera pack, and the results are just dreamy...

 

 

Unfortunately, this week i am very under the weather so no process video to share, instead i will walk you through the layout.   To start, I used a gessoed foundations papers to create the background.   I wanted the colors of fall to pop from the picture and page, so my choice was to create  a very neutral and textured watercolor background.

 

 

First, a bit of white watercolor was mixed with Acrylic gel and then ran through one of the Ink Spill stencils to create the texture on the background. Once it dried, I used a bit of watercolor (black and #12) to create the triangular watercolor shape in the background.   I chose black as it is a perfect neutral, that will bring all the details of the page to live, and then the bit of teal watercolor adds to the depth of the background as well as lightens up the watercolor shape.

 

While the watercolor dried, i used my Silhouette Cameo to cut some flowers from the Abstract Moments, Collect and Document and Simple Things papers, as well as some leaves (using a Just Nick cut file) from the Field Notes paper.   I used a bone folder to create the curvature on the flower petals before assembling them, this helps to bring movement and dimension to the page.  I secure all the flowers with a small brad so that the layers will keep in place and to bring a bit of shine to the page.

 

 

I used a bit of the same papers to back and layered this picture from about 8 years ago, and then glued it to the center of the triangle. I pulled the journaling ephemera and decided to create a large cluster at the left corner of the picture.    I used an exacto knife to detail some of the pieces that were added to this page.   Now it was time to add all those flowers as clusters at the edges of the watercolor triangle.  I pulled leaves from the ephemera icons, and a few that i had previously stamped and watercolored to help create the floral clusters.

 

 

To finish the page, i used another of the  journaling ephemera pieces to create my title.  A fussy cut butterfly -from the Take Flight) paper- just helps to complete the title work.  To finish, i added a few lines of journal and some gold ink drops!  love how this turned out !!!

Traveler's Notebook Spread with Leigh: Product Focus

Hello fellow mixed media makers! I have a quick TN page to share using Jana's product focus: journal die cuts. The Field Notes Journal Die Cuts made this a quick ten minute page.

 

 

 

Seriously, this page could not have been easier, and that is thanks to the great designs on the journaling die cuts in the embellishment pack. I piled them on the right, after adding my hand-written journaling to the orange details die cut. 

 

 

 

The watercolor splashes are created with a light blue art crayon and VB Watercolor Brushes. I stamped the Field Notes floral stamp on vellum with two colors of pigment ink, and heat embossed with clear powder so the colors of ink show. I stapled on the vellum flower, and added staples to two other spots on the journal die cuts. 

 

 

Close up of the layers, a quick and easy way to add interest to your TN pages, with preprinted die cuts. The little Good Stuff label adds the tan color to another area of the page.

 

 

 

The Field Notes "Happy Heart" paper adds the blue pattern to the left side. I love to add a full page of pattern this way in a traveler's notebook.

Field Notes Product Highlight with Jana

Hi everyone, Jana here with you today and i am very excited to share this Layout with you.
This week we want to highlight the {journaling spots} from the Vicki Boutin "Field Notes" Collection.

I started this project with a CutFile from Vicki Boutin, she shared it in our FB Mixed Media Community last week, and some patterned Papers from the Field Notes 12x12 Paper Pad.
I knew i wanted to use soft pinks and peach tones, with a touch of kraft, on this Layout. I also used my WeR HappyJig tool for a nice detail in the mix of layered and stitched leaves.

I decided to go with some soft colors in the background too. I grabbed a sheet of the white Foundation Paper, Perfect Gesso, a stencil from the {ink spill} set, Art Crayons {warm set} and started to add some details and colors to the paper. The Gesso can also be used for some dimensional and textured shapes on your paper.
The color matches perfect the leaves and the word "hello".

I had a look into the Field Notes {journaling spots} and grabbed all the pinks and kraft toned DieCuts. I only used these pieces for my layering behind the photo. I distressed all of the edges and i really love the look of it. I stitched the wire word to one of the journaling cards and clustered everything very close to the photo.

The leaves were scattered around the layout and were also clued down with some 3D foam tape for a lot of dimension. I stitched through the middle of two layered leaves; this is giving more movement and kind of a real feel to them. The photo shows my middle one, he turned 14 last week. I really love this photo from him.

I really love the soft colors on this Layout, the leaves are a nice detail, and because he is a october/fall child they are perfect for this project.
The Field Notes {journaling spots} are perfect for your littles notes, but also perfect for layering.

Make Your Own Embellishments with Nathalie

 Nathalie with you today.   This week Jana has challenged all of  us to create embellishments for our projects. Since Vicki just released her first free cut file, what better way than to combine both to create this week's project!...

 

 

The leaves were the starting point of this layout; since i had cut them from white textured cardstock, i used the VIcki Boutin art crayons  in a fall palette to create the watercolor look on them in two ways.  

 

 

All the full leaf cut outs were smooshed on art crayon pigment, and then a few drops of watercolor were added (a great way to cheat watercolor).  Also using the same art crayon colors and one of the Junque Journal watercolor papers an entire sheet of watercolor paper was created to back the outline paper leaves.   A few gold and copper leaves were glued to the leaves using matte acrylic gel.

 

 

 

The cut file was also used to cut some leaves from the watercolor paper.  All the leaves were stitched to the center line as to add texture.  To create the background, I mixed a bit of green art crayon with a bit of gray art crayon, from the neutral set, the new tone was added in an inverted "v" shape to a gessoed foundation paper using a brayer.   Once it dried, the same color of art crayons was used to stamp some of the images from the Escape stamp and die set along the background.

 

 

 

Since we are all about DIYing our embellishments, I decided to cut some of the journaling spots from the 12x12 paper pad, as well as a few butterflies from one of the collection papers.   The journaling spots work perfect as layers behind the picture, while the butterflies help bring interest to the page.     Just a few extra embellishments from the Field notes were added to create small clusters around the picture.   The title was created using one of the ephemera pieces, a  little bit of gold splatters and the project is done!

 

The colors and shine in the page are perfect to document a picture of one of our walking advventures around our neighborhood.   You can see more details on how this came together in the following video.

Jana's Challenge: DIY Embellishments with Leigh

Hello friends! Leigh here, to share a layout using Jana's challenge this week. Create your own embellishments easily with the Vicki Boutin Stamp and Die Sets! I made mine with left over shrink film, and Vicki Boutin Paint Pens.

 

 

 

I used the new cut file available from the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media Community on Facebook, to cut all the leaves on my Silhouette. After shrinking the stamped leaves they look like little jewelry embellishments on the finished page. I scattered them among the cut file leaves.

 

 

 

Here are the shrink film images after they were stamped and painted. I painted the backs, and stamped the front, because the paint pens are opaque.  Painting the back will hide any imperfections, while the front image stays crisper. Don't worry if your stamped images aren't perfect, as it won't show by the time you shrink them. :)

 

 

 

Here are the leaves and the shrink film DIY embellishments on the page. I created an art crayon watercolor mixed media area and let it dry first, then added all my elements to the right hand side. I mixed in some Field Notes puffy stickers too, since they were a similar size to the DIY embellishments. I stamped some words from the stamp set, and the Vicki Boutin Rotary Stamp.

 

 

 

I backed the cut files with patterned papers from the Field Notes line, that read as solids. I used the VB Pigment Ink Color Wheel inks to blend on some darker ink to create an ombre effect before I glued it to the backs of the cut files. Since the brush stroke pattern on the bottom of the layout is strong and the watercolor area creates a lot of pattern, I wanted the leaves to be somewhat subtle. 

 

 

 

The journaling is placed right below the photo and the chipboard Field Notes Thicker set creates a horizontal line to cross the vertical elements on the page.  The title is also from the free cut file set available in the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media Community. The yellow leaves were splattered with watercolor made with the Art Crayons.

 

 

 

The finished layout has an embellishments cluster at the top left, since the photo has a lot of weight to it. The DIY shrink film leaves add a bit of dark contrast to coordinate with the photo. This ended up being a color scheme I have never attempted before, but I like how it turned out! The pattern at the bottom was the in aspiration for the page!
